An August you won't want to miss

February 18, 2025

If your August plans this year don't feature fly fishing on the Missouri, you are missing out! This winter covered Montana in exceptional snowpack, and our tailwater is poised for some excellent late summer fishing. By August, the out-of-town crowds have headed back home and locals flock to the river for world-class floating great fishing. Cold, consistent water and warm beautiful weather make for an ideal day on the river.

Ants, hoppers, caddis and tricos will provide pockets of action for the avid dry fly angler. While our terrestrial hatches may not be as famous as some of the freestones, Missouri River trout will voraciously attack a hopper along prime banks. This is great time of year to work on fishing big dries! In the early morning, plumes of tricos will still be coming off and ants provide a great day-time option for warier fish.

Nymphing in August is where the Missouri can really shine. While some weeds may show up this time of year, so do the crayfish. Crayfish are big bugs, and big bugs mean one thing... big trout! Guides will often fish double crayfish patterns to elicit aggressive strikes from our world class fish.

Streamer fishing is all but on the back burner this time of year, though some anglers choose to target pike and carp lower on the Missouri. This is a great time of year to switch it up and cross off a few new species.

Drop us a line, and we'll see you soon at the ranch!
