Caddis, PMDs & Tricos, the dry fly parade continues!

July 7, 2022

Fly Fishing Update: A (wonderfully) wet spring/early summer, blue bird skies, and ideal flows (~5,100 CFS) have created ideal conditions for our summer season. A far cry from the low flows of 2021, the 2022 season is shaping up to be one for the history books. We can't remember the last time the Missouri has experienced such consistent and productive hatches. There's never been a better time to come experience the best dry fly fishing in Montana. Caddis abound, PMDs continue to produce, and Tricos are just around the corner! With steady hatches and a variety of insects hatching, many MRR anglers have chosen to fish dry flies exclusively. Anglers are rewarded with opportunities to hunt heads with PMDs, or blind cast caddis and see some exhilarating takes. The Missouri River is the best place in Montana to work on you dry fly presentations. Anglers are excited for the summer Trico hatch, which is building steam with each passing day. Nymphing has produced beautiful fish from top-to-bottom on the river. Frenchies, tailwater sow bugs, scuds and zebra midges continue to get the job done. MRR anglers have reported that short-leashing and flies run at moderate depth have been producing. Streamer fishing has heated up from last week. Olive wooly buggers have been producing some aggressive takes. Make sure you dial in your strip set before hitting the water. Drop us a line and we hope to see you soon!
