June on the Missouri River starts great and ends with even better fishing conditions. As flows increase to accommodate our reservoirs, deep nymphing is outstanding. Once those flows stabilize, a veritable explosion of bug life kicks off and our world renowned PMD hatch takes center stage. Every angler should experience a June on the Missouri.
Pale Morning Duns are the golden ticket to dry fly angling in June. As flows stabilize and the hatch intensifies, Missouri River trout eat PMDs with reckless abandon. As one of our largest mayflies, this hatch is a pleasure to fish with large, easy-to-see patterns. Serious dry fly anglers will not want to miss this hatch.
The nymphing at the start of June can be deep but short leashing becomes the name-of-the-game as water levels stabilize and the PMD hatch reaches peak level. Dry-dropper fishing can be wildly effective this time of year.
Streamer fishing a thin mint on a sink tip is a great way to tackle days with higher flows and to still connect with beautiful fish. It's also one of the last opportunities to do so before our trout move into their summer patterns.
